2D Design Assignments | 9:10 p.m. - 2008-06-25

These are some assignments from the Two-Dimensional Design class I took in spring 2008.

The first one is from an assignment that had us reproduce a master work in black and white, first with pencil and then as a collage. I did Van Gogh's "Cafe Terrace at Night." Here is the pencil drawing...

And here is the collage.

Here is a color project that had us reproduce the same composition with different color schemes (I made my own composition this time).

And here is a project dealing with transparency. I titled it "Pepper #30" after Edward Weston's famous photograph. It has kind of a Van Gogh feel, I think.

The paintings were done with acrylic on bristol. They're all small sizes, only about half a page wide or so. I have two large compositions that I did at the end of the semester but I'll have to take digital pictures of them, sometime later...

Mizuki Aiko Characters | 9:27 p.m. - 2008-04-14

Remember my old attempt at a manga, "Mizuki Aiko"? I'm turning it into a short story now (though it isn't finished yet). Here are some character sketches that I did for it...

Rain Shaddai: This is one of the new characters that I made up, whom I like very much. I am hoping that there will be something between him and Aya, in the future...but no guarantees.

Aya Sakurai: Another new character. It's funny how the characters you make up on the spot end up having the most personality. The style I had in mind for Aya was "insanely cute." But she is also extremely shy, which makes up for it.

Mizuki Aiko: Main character #1. A much better drawing of her than when I first conceived this idea.

Ichiro: Main character #2. Please try to ignore the fact that he hasn't got a family name...Since his name means something like "first" or "one," I want his name to have more of a symbolic meaning. That and I couldn't seem to find a name that fit him other than a "Sakura"-type name, like Aya's.

His character in the story wears reading glasses, which I didn't originally plan in the manga.

Chieko Katsumi: Another of Mizuki's friends that I made up for the story. I get the feeling that everyone will hate her character because she is such a gossip, but it's actually kind of fun to write from a perspective like that. It's hard not to make her sound too over-the-top, though.
