JENNY WEATHERHOLT

Grade: 10 (high school sophomore)
Habits: smoking, hating the world, etc...

Jenny is the main character / narrator. She lives in a dysfunctional trailer home with her alcoholic mother and perfectionist stepfather. Despite problems at home she really loves her mother and wishes things could be the way they were before her mom remarried. Jenny's boyfriend is a football-playing popular senior named Jarrod Westley. Jarrod doesn't love Jenny, he just uses her and beats up on her whenever he feels like it. So Jenny is somewhat desensitized to the way she is treated by others. She has a friend named Trevor (more about him later) who really cares about her, but she doesn't care much for him. She has a crush on her other popular friend, Mike. Since Jenny is something of a trouble maker, she is sentenced to an after-school learning project with a man named Mr. Joe, who teaches her the guitar...and a lot about life in the process.

Hobbies: listening to music, talking about music, anything musical, really...

Here is Trevor wearing one of his beanies "made by Jamaican refugees or something." Trevor is a passive social activist. He is also a musician. He is making one of his "Jenny you're so cute and I'm in love with you but I'm too bashful" smiles. Jenny is pretty much Trevor's only friend, and he is really committed to her even though she doesn't seem to care about him a lot. He met Jenny during their freshman year of high school, before she started dating Jarrod. Trevor wants to make Jenny smile the way she used to. Since Jarrod (along with everyone else) has started to shun Jenny, she hangs out with Trevor more now and they listen to music together. We don't know if Trevor is really a musician like he says...or if he just likes to listen to music a lot. His favorite bands/musicians are Ben Harper, The Frames, and Beck. And yes, he has a beard.

MIKE ZECHARIAH
Age: 17 or 18
Hair Color: black
Eye Color: Blue
Height: 5' 11"
Grade: 12
Involvement: football team, student council, stuff like that

Mike is a mysterious fellow. He doesn't look like the type of guy that would fit in with Jarrod and the rest of the popular kids, but everyone likes him just fine. Especially Jenny. Mike is the only person in that clique who is really friendly to her. He is also extremely attractive. Mike isn't the best role model...he experiments with drugs a lot, and often gets mixed up in the "wrong crowd". But he's a good guy at heart and really cares about the people he comes in contact with.
